Working on the next great guidebook bestseller? Have I got a tip for you!

Ah travel writing. Its one of the more glamorous genre’s within the professional world, or at least the one with the best perks, which I can verify from experience (Thailand here I come)! But I digress…

Aspiring travel writers are always welcome to submit features and mini guides to our masthead, GoNOMAD.com (writer’s guidelines here) but for what about the full fledged guide writers? Normally, I’d direct you  to the nearest publishing house, but we got a unique tip that I couldn’t bear to not share with you all.

GuideGecko.com, a publishing platform for travel and lifestyle guides has launched its 2010 International Guidebook Writing Contest! That’ right, a fully fledged guide book contest. Three winning guide books will be showcased at the Insight Guides booth on the world’s largest book fair in Frankfurt, Germany, and the winner will be flown to the fair to meet and mingle with publishers from all over the world. Is that a lucky break or what?

From now to September 15, writers worldwide can submit their own guide books to  GuideGecko’s Writing Contest and get that much closer to the jump-start of their writing career.

The contest is open to anyone from casual writers and bloggers to established authors. Travel guidebooks as well as  food, lifestyle and entertainment guidebooks are allowed as long as they meet the minimum of 32 pages in length. Submission rules are flexible too; content can be new a title or existing title, even something that has been previously published, on GuideGecko or elsewhere.

The winning titles will be selected by a jury of guidebook industry veterans. The jury’s decision is also blended with  an online voting system that’s already open to the public. The submitted guidebooks will be published instantly and listed on GuideGecko’s front page to receive maximum visibility. Viewers can choose to vote for and even order these guidebooks immediately. Participation in the contest is free and the authors receive full royalties and retain their copyrights.

The Frankfurt book fair takes place from October 6-10, 2010. The winner will fly with Lufthansa German Airlines and stay at  Maritim Konferenzhotel Darmstadt *a contest sponsor) while in Frankfurt.

But get cracking! Closing date for submission is September 15, with the prize winners  announced on October 1st. For more information, to enter the contest and to place votes, please visit GuideGecko’s Writing Contest.
