A New Airport in London?

In London, plans are underway to build a new airport on a landfill in the Thames River Estuary east of London. It would create an island on which the new airport could be built. Overcrowding at Heathrow is the reason this idea is getting traction. A study is underway to see if it is feasible.

The new airport would connect to the existing Eurostar high speed railway, which provide passenger and freight service between London and Continental Europe. Eventually, planners expect to phase  out Heathrow and this new more modern airport will take its place. Because planes would approach the new facility from the North Sea, there would be fewer noise complaints.

The alternative is to build a third runway at Heathrow. British Airways says that a new airport ís a “nonstarter” They just recently opened a multibillion pound terminal which has been plagued by problems and delays. They don’t want to wait 20 or 30 years, but want to make Heathrow bigger now. He also thinks the idea of closing Heathrow and building a new airport is ridiculous.
